Ange Postecoglou reveals clear-cut reason behind choosing Tottenham Hotspur job

Ange Postecoglou became Tottenham Hotspur’s head coach this summer after a long search by Daniel Levy that began after Antonio Conte’s departure last season.

He wasn’t really Spurs’ first choice either. According to the Express, Arne Slot of Feyenoord and former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann were among Tottenham’s preferred candidates.

But in the end, the Australian-Greek manager got the job, with one of his first tasks being sorting out Harry Kane’s future at the club. Despite the English legend’s move to Bayern, he has steadied the ship at Spurs, to say the least.

Postecoglou is the man for the job

Talking about leaving Celtic and picking Tottenham, Postecoglou told FourFourTwo magazine (h/t Daily Record):

“The biggest motivation for me was taking over a big club that hadn’t had success. They’re just the kind of challenges I love and it’s pretty regular in my story – taking over a club which has had a disappointing year and is craving success.

“That’s what I’ve tried to seek throughout my whole career. When I was at South Melbourne they hadn’t won the league for seven years, at Brisbane they’d never won one, Yokohama 15 years, Celtic a year – and a year at Celtic feels more like 15 years everywhere else!”

Postecoglou, 58, managed a number of Australian clubs before making the switch to Japanese giants Yokohama F. Marinos. He won the league title with them in 2019 after a 15-year wait for the club.

The job at Celtic exposed him to proper European football, which then led him to Spurs. Ange’s claim that he wants to bring success to a team that has underachieved is exactly why he is the right choice for us.

We tried out big personalities in the dressing room — Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte in particular. And that didn’t work out. It almost seemed like they were losing patience that Spurs weren’t winning titles straightaway.

Postecoglou seems much more patient, calm, and committed to the long-term project. He hasn’t had a history of winning multiple titles in consecutive years so perhaps a slow start to life at Spurs won’t frustrate him.

He is having anything but a slow start here, though. Ange has brought a good vibe to the club, who currently sit top of the table after eight games. A title in his debut season would be one of the stories of modern English football, for sure.
